PEELER TO HOLD COMMUNITY WORKSHOP TO HELP WITH CONSTITUENT SERVICES IN LOCKHART

Lockhart, SC – October 18, 2011 – Senator Harvey Peeler will hold a community workshop in Lockhart at the Lockhart Town Hall on Tuesday, November 1 from 5:00 – 6:30 pm.

At the community workshop, Senator Peeler will be available to assist local constituents in resolving their problems with state government. This is Senator Peeler’s third community workshop of several that he will hold across Senate District 14 which consists of Cherokee, Spartanburg, Union and York counties. REGULATIONS WOULD BAN SALE OF BATH SALTS AND SPICE

Gaffney, SC – September 21, 2011 – SC Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler has contacted both DHEC and SLED to urge that they issue emergency regulations prohibiting the sale of spice and bath salts. Both spice, a synthetic marijuana, and bath salts, being used as synthetic cocaine, mimic the effects of illegal drugs.

In early September, the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration moved to ban three of the substances found in bath salts. These three substances could be banned within 90 days. The continuing problem is that makers of these drugs will tweak the compound just enough so that it will not be illegal. Currently both spice and bath salts are not listed as a controlled substance in South Carolina.

“These drugs can often cause harm to their users who may think that since it is ‘legal’ that it is safe. Several deaths have even been attributed to its use. I strongly urge DHEC to act today to file emergency regulations and get spice and bath salts off the streets,” said Peeler.

Emergency regulations take effect as quickly as they are filed with Legislative Council. Last session, the Senate unanimously passed legislation that banned synthetic marijuana but the bill stalled in the House. Peeler is drafting new legislation to permanently ban both spice and bath salts.

Peeler continued, “I hope the Legislature will move quickly on this bill when we reconvene in January.”

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the most heinous attack perpetrated against innocent Americans on our soil. These attacks in New York and D.C. set into motion a chain of events that altered the course of our country. We’ll never be the same as a nation, and we should always take time to remember the sacrifices made on that day.

September 11 made everyday Americans stand up and take action. This bravery started with the actions of the men and women on United Flight 93, who stopped the hijackers from killing any more innocent Americans on the ground. This bravery has continued with our soldiers and law enforcement officers fighting around the world to protect our home.

Today, please take the time to remember all the sacrifices that occurred on that early Tuesday morning in September. Please remember all the sacrifices that families have made in the ten years since that day. Most importantly, please remember that Americans are still making sacrifices today and will continue to do so in the future.

With each year’s passing, we must never forget. Please join me today in remembering and offering thanks to the brave men and women who protected us on September 11 and who protect us today.

Sincerely,

Harvey Peeler

The South Carolina Senate Republican leader says he’s ready to do away with the Transportation Commission that makes decisions on which roads are built or repaired in the state.

Gaffney Sen. Harvey Peeler told The Greenville News he’s ready for the next governor to take full control of the transportation department.

Lawmakers revamped the agency’s governing board in 2007, but some are not happy with the results.

Peeler is especially upset that Interstate 85 across the Upstate needs repairs but the commission approved more than $100 million to begin a $2.5 billion project for I-73 to run from I-95 to Myrtle Beach.

Not everyone agrees with Peeler. Fountain Inn Sen. David Thomas says while there are concerns, he sees no reason to change the 2007 law restructuring the agency.

Texas governor and GOP presidential contender Rick Perry added an endorsement from one of the Upstate’s most powerful elected officials in a brief stop to the area late Saturday morning.

Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler, R-Gaffney, threw his support behind the candidate who has shot to the forefront of the Republican presidential race just one week after announcing his candidacy in Charleston.

Peeler cited Perry’s job creation record in explaining the endorsement.

“His record as governor of Texas is what we need,” Peeler said in an interview with the Herald-Journal. “We desperately need a leader in the White House, and he’s the person.”

Columbia GOP consultant Wesley Donehue, who works for Peeler, tweeted later Saturday that Peeler had called Perry months ago to ask him to seek the Republican nomination.

Perry did not make a statement or speak to the media during his impromptu stop in Gaffney, set in a restaurant parking lot adjacent to the town’s giant peach water tower. A crowd of about 50 people attended the gathering.

After the stop, Peeler rode on Perry’s campaign bus to an official event in Rock Hill, the final campaign event of Perry’s two-day swing through the state.

Ed Morrell of Boiling Springs stopped to watch Perry in Gaffney and said he’s strongly considering voting for the Texas governor in South Carolina’s first-in-the-South Republican presidential primary tentatively slated for February.

Morrell, a 72-year-old Republican, said he’s “still shopping around,” but likes Perry’s jobs and low unemployment record in Texas.

“That’s going to be a great advantage,” he said.

According to data released on Friday, Texas’ unemployment rate was 8.4 percent in July, the highest level there in nearly a quarter century.

But that rate is still much lower than the latest figures from the Palmetto State. South Carolina’s unemployment rate was 10.9 percent in July.

At a stop in Greenville earlier Saturday morning, Perry garnered the endorsement of former U.S. ambassador to Canada David Wilkins.

Wilkins, a Republican, served 25 years in the South Carolina Legislature, including as House speaker for 11 of those years.

According to the Associated Press, Wilkins was a top fundraiser for George W. Bush’s 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns and served as his South Carolina campaign chairman in 2004.
